The plant is very thorny and makes an excellent impenetrable barrier or hedge, though this barrier is not very dense.

This plant was introduced into Europe in the 19th century by the German physician and plant collector, von Siebold, from Japan where this plant species had become established much earlier.
The fruit is widely used for treating allergies including allergic dermatitis and inflammation in traditional oriental medicine.
