De bloemen en het blad zijn eetbaar. De bladeren zijn te gebruiken bij kip- of visgerechten. Fijngesneden shisoblad is te verwerken in dipsaus voor bij de sushi of als kruid door salades, over noedels of pasta te gebruiken.
De rode bladeren worden gebruikt om voedsel roze tot wijnrood te kleuren.
Het blad bevat veel mineralen, vitaminen en antioxidanten en versterkt het immuunsysteem bij opkomende verkoudheid. De aldehyden in het blad van de groene shiso hebben een aseptische werking; dat helpt bij voedselvergiftiging door verkeerde rauwe vis.
