Al in 1611 maakten Karmeliter monniken uit Parijs een elixer uit de gedroogde blaadjes van de citroenmelisse. Het zou levensverlengende kwaliteiten hebben. Deze “melissengeest” wordt nu nog steeds aan diverse kruidenlikeuren zoals Chartreuse en Benediktiner toegevoegd en geeft daar het speciale smaakje aan.
Blad heeft een ontspannende werking bij stress, hoofdpijn of slapeloosheid. Onderzoeken tonen aan dat kruid virusremmende eigenschappen bezit en goed is voor het geheugen van oudere mensen.
Goede bijenplant.
Bladeren geven citroenachtige geur af.
