Deptford Pink
Dianthus armeria
Pink family (Caryophyllaceae)
Vulnerable (VU)
At the northernmost limit of its distribution
The name armeria echos the name ‘Flos Armerius’ used as a collective noun for different pinks or carnations. Thrift (Armeria maritima), also bearing small, pink flowers, was once assigned to the carnation family. The Dutch prefix ‘ruig’ (ragged) refers to the way in which it flowers, which gives a somewhat messy impression as the flowers don’t all bloom at once.
