Clustered Bellflower
Campanula glomerata
Bellflower family (Campanulaceae)
Purple blue and tightly packed flowers
The clustered bellflower prefers wet, calcareous, grassland and is very scarce on river levees and only very occasionally found along roadsides. In contrast to the other native bellflowers, the clustered bellflower can reach 30 cm in height and bears its diverse set of flowers in the axils of the uppermost leaves. The fine covering of hairs and the violet blue colour of the flowers are also distinguishing characters.
This species is often cultivated (and is thus much stronger) for use as a garden plant and although prone to escaping rarely lasts long in the wild. Its status as "critically endangered" on the Dutch Red List says it all but globally the clustered bellflower is widespread in its distribution: from Europe to Japan.
