spatheflower
Spathiphyllum cannifolium
Arum family (Araceae)
Purifying in the dark
The white bracts stand out sharply against the dark background of the tropical rain forest, where this moderately toxic peace lily grows naturally. Since the small flowers are borne together on an inconspicuous felty spike, the plant needs an eye-catching bract to attract flies and other insects.
Spathiphyllum grows on the dark soils of South American forests and is therefore accustomed to low light intensity and can be grown inside. For this reason it has become an established Dutch houseplant for many decades. An additional advantage to keeping this plant inside is its ability to purify the air of toxic substances such as benzene and formaldehyde.
