Violet Phalaenopsis
Phalaenopsis violacea
Orchid family (Orchidaceae)
Found on a Dutch expedition
The genus Phalaenopsis will be familiar to many plant enthusiasts – it is the most frequently bought orchid. Each year in the Netherlands about 25 million plants of Phalaenopsis are grown. Compared with the moth orchids that produce many flowers on windowsills, the flowers of the wild Phalaenopsis violacea are relatively small (up to 3.5 cm), purple in colour with a slight fragrance.
Phalaenopsis violacea was found on a Dutch expedition in the middle of the 19th century and taken first to the botanic garden in Leiden and shortly thereafter to the botanic garden in Amsterdam. H. Witte was the first to study and scientifically describe these orchids.
