Copiapoa is a genus of spherical to short-columnar cacti that grow in the coastal deserts and adjacent mountain areas of northern Chile – one of the driest places on Earth. All species have rather small, yellow flowers. The genus is named after the town Copiapo. Copiapoa humilis has been known since 1860 when the species was described as Echinocactus humilis.
