Chinese Arbor-vitae
Platycladus orientalis 'Blijdenstein'
Cypress family (Cupressaceae)
A spontaneous appearance in Blijdenstein
This conifer is a spontaneous mutation of the Chinese arborvitae. It forms a long, slender, yet closed, growth habit. The scales are silvery green in the summer and later turn yellow-green. The branches are somewhat pendulous.
This mutation arose spontaneously in 1937 in the Blijdenstein Pinetum in Hilversum, and was named after the founder and financier of this garden. From the Blijdenstein Pinetum cuttings of this particular cultivar has been distributed to gardens around the world. Within the Pinetum there are two adult specimens, including the oldest example in the world, namely the original specimen.
