Municipalities no longer use pesticides for a number of years. Weeds are brushed away or sprayed with hot water where they are in the way. As a result, more weeds remain in places where they are not in the way. People are used to weeds being untidy and they are bothered by it.
Sidewalk plants
The Sidewalk Plants project, which started in the Hortus botanicus Leiden, aims to increase appreciation for the wild plants on the sidewalk. They are useful: they help cool the city, they provide food for pollinators and birds and they contribute to biodiversity. You see different species than a few years ago: the new sidewalk plants are well resistant to climate changes. You can pick them and do all sorts of things with them; that also makes the plants interesting for children.
Botanical sidewalk chalk
Botanical sidewalk chalk, writing the name next to plants with sidewalk chalk, is a great way to point out the plants to passers-by and to introduce walkers to plant names in a fun way. Plant connoisseurs, get to work with sidewalk chalk, write the name next to sidewalk plants with sidewalk chalk - the Dutch or scientific ones. Where possible, add #sidewalkplants so people know where to find more. A rain shower is enough to erase everything again. All participating, viewers and writers, please share photos with the plant, name and hashtag on social media to encourage more people to participate.
